In a shocking road rage incident in Ontario, Ohio, 27-year-old Wesley Patrick from Crestline has been charged with voluntary manslaughter after allegedly shooting and killing 42-year-old Andrew Westlund on December 21, 2025.
The confrontation occurred around 8:53 p.m. on Lexington-Springmill Road near U.S. 30. According to court testimony from the preliminary hearing, Patrick told investigators he was tailgated aggressively, then blocked by Westlund's Nissan Xterra. Westlund reportedly exited his vehicle and approached Patrick's Ford Focus, yelling for him to get out.
Patrick remained inside his locked car, retrieved his 9mm handgun, rolled down the window, and fired a single shot into Westlund's center mass — a shot that severed the victim's aorta and proved fatal. Patrick admitted he aimed to "maim" or "eliminate the threat," claiming self-defense, but noted Westlund was unarmed and made no direct threats beyond the verbal confrontation.
Patrick called 911 himself, stayed at the scene with hazard lights on, cooperated fully with police (including voluntary statements and searches), and has no prior criminal record. Despite this, he was held on a $1 million bond, which the judge maintained after prosecutors highlighted social media posts with violent lyrics.
On December 23, 2025, Mansfield Municipal Court Judge Michael Kemerer found probable cause and bound the case over to a Richland County grand jury for further review. The grand jury will decide whether to indict on voluntary manslaughter or consider self-defense arguments.
This case raises intense debate: Was this justified self-defense in a heated road rage encounter, or an overreaction leading to tragedy? As of late December 2025, the investigation continues with assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
