North Windham Shooting: Man Killed, Suspect Found After Shelter-in-Place

Police in North Windham, Maine, say a man was shot and killed Friday afternoon on Route 302, and that a suspect was located after a shelter-in-place order was issued. The shooting happened around 1:55 p.m. at the intersection of Route 302 and Landing Road.

What Happened on Route 302

Windham Police Chief Kevin Schofield said officers received multiple 911 calls reporting the shooting. Witness Julia Hebert told reporters the victim was riding a motorcycle when they were shot twice by someone in a passing vehicle. Bystanders attempted lifesaving measures, but the victim did not survive.

Maine’s Total Coverage reporters saw a body in the middle of Route 302 next to a blue motorcycle. That motorcycle has since been removed from the scene.

Massive Police Search for the Suspect

After the shooting, police established a large perimeter extending into Raymond, Maine, and deployed helicopters and drones in the search. At about 4 p.m., residents between Whites Bridge Road in Windham and Route 85 in Raymond were ordered to shelter in place. A statewide emergency alert was mistakenly sent to all of Maine via the IPAWS system.

Suspect Located in Raymond

Authorities said a Cumberland County deputy found the suspect’s vehicle at a Dunkin’ in Raymond. Witness tips helped officers track the vehicle. A mobile command post was set up in the Paris Farmers Union parking lot nearby. The suspect was located shortly after the vehicle was found, though officials have not said whether the suspect is alive or dead.

Shelter-in-Place Lifted

The order was lifted shortly after 7 p.m., and Maine State Police confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public. The names of the victim and suspect have not been released.
